Business Barometer: Airport trends continue to mirror national increases

Business Barometer is a quarterly GSI publication that highlights significant economic indicators for the greater-Spokane region, as told by four local economists. The blog series contains eight posts; you’re reading post #6.

Q1 2015-GEG“Spokane International Airport is following the market trend we see in most similarly-sized communities,” says Todd Woodard, director of marketing and public relations, Spokane International Airport, “with larger planes, fewer frequencies and high load factors.”

In the first quarter, there was a healthy 3.5% increase in passengers over the same period in 2014. Woodard credits Delta’s new flights between Seattle and Spokane as one factor in the passenger growth so far this year.

There was also an upswing in cargo numbers for first quarter – a 2.5% increase. While much of the growth in cargo numbers since 2012 can be attributed to consolidation of postal industry cargo, the current increases reflect the overall positive business climate in the region.
