GSI Hosts CHINA Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections

NCUSCR_logo_NEWGreater Spokane Incorporated was pleased to be a host location for the National Committee on US-China Relations’ 9th Annual CHINA Town Hall: Local Connections, National Reflections, a national day of programming on China involving about 75 cities.

The 2015 program featured a live webcast panel discussion with Robert Rubin, Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton; Sheldon Day, Mayor, Thomasville, Alabama; and Daniel Rosen, Founding Partner, Rhodium Group. National Committee President Stephen Orlins served as moderator.

The panel discussed Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) in the United States with the goal of helping Americans better understand the complex US-China relationship and the growing role of Chinese investment.

The webcast was followed by a local presentation at GSI by Nelson Dong, Partner at Seattle-based Dorsey & Whitney LLP. Mr. Dong addressed a wide range of business and trade topics related to China, including leading potential growth sectors in the next 3-5 years in China. As China is trying to move its gigantic economy from manufacturing exports to a more self-sufficient and more internally driven economy, business opportunities abound in such areas as food and agriculture, clean tech, alternative energy and healthcare.

With the gyrations in the Chinese equity markets, the downturn in China’s export-fueled growth rate and President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the U.S. (including Seattle), Mr. Dong also discussed the current macro trend lines and offered some near- and medium-term assessments on China’s economy and its geopolitical relationships with the U.S. and its regional neighbors in north Asia.
