GSI Denounces Graffiti Hate Crime at MLK Center

(SPOKANE, Wash.) – Greater Spokane Incorporated joins other community organizations in denouncing the spray-painted racial slur discovered at the Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center early Tuesday morning.

As staff at the MLK Center arrived for work, they discovered graffiti on the building that contained a racial slur. This action does not define the city of Spokane, nor does it define the Spokane region. As demonstrated by the solidarity of our community Tuesday afternoon, the Spokane region is unified in speaking out against the derogatory remarks.

“On behalf of the GSI Board of Trustees and the greater business community, we want to make it known that hate and racism are not welcome in this region,” said Todd Mielke, CEO of Greater Spokane Incorporated. “This is the work of small-minded people, who carry out actions like these in the middle of the night. It’s wrong, no matter who you are. We are a community that stands together in support of diversity and in celebration of our differences.”

Our region and business community unite against hate crimes like these, and work to ensure Spokane is an environment where valued partners can thrive and build a stronger community and economy. We are stronger united, as demonstrated by the encouragement and support provided to the MLK Center in the wake of this incident.
