Let Freedom Ring celebrates our nation’s heroes through a special awards program that honors local active duty, guard and reserve members of the armed forces along with first responders. This is our community's opportunity to thank the men and women who serve and protect our freedoms.
LTC (Ret) Alan Westfield served as an Infantry officer for 21 years in command and staff positions for the United States Army in the United States, Europe, and Southwest and Central Asia. He earned a commission into the Officer Corps in 1979 and served with the 197th Infantry Brigade, 1st Armored Division, 3rd US Army, the Berlin Brigade, US Army Europe, and US Army Cadet Command. He deployed to Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1990-1991, Operation Joint Endeavor in 1996, Operations Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn in 2010, and Resolute Support in Afghanistan in 2015-2016. From 1996-2000, he served as Professor of Military Science at Eastern Washington University. Since retiring from active duty in Sept. 2000, Westfield has been a Senior Military Science Instructor at Gonzaga and Whitworth Universities responsible for attracting and developing future Army officers for challenges that lie ahead, teaching the Bulldog Battalion’s sophomore MS IIs, and coaching the Ranger Challenge team.
Westfield grew up in Beverly, Massachusetts and earned a BS from the United States Military Academy, an MSA from Central Michigan University, and a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University. He graduated from the US Army Ranger and Airborne Schools, Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Mortar Platoon Course, Northern Warfare Course, Bradley Leader Course, and the Command and General Staff College. He is also a member of Leadership Spokane Planning Committee, Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ Service Academy Advisory Committee, and the Gonzaga University School of Leadership Studies Advisory Board.
