We invite you to join us and participate in an awareness-building discussion and collaboration at the Summit on Graduate Medical Education (GME – also known as the residency portion of medical education). Learn what GME is and how the community can support its success, hear from Spokane residents about their GME training experience, and learn how GME plays a critical role in filling physician workforce needs in Spokane and Eastern Washington.
Two medical schools — the UW School of Medicine through a Regional Health Partnership with Gonzaga University and the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine — are addressing this issue by training more medical students in our region, but that is only the first step. After medical school graduation comes residency training (GME) – required before an M.D. can practice medicine. Training residents is very expensive and federal funds, by themselves, are insufficient.
We need your help to identify low cost services, spouse job assistance, child care support, loan forgiveness/repayment services, and other ideas that would make greater Spokane attractive to graduating medical students looking for residency positions. The more residents that are training and living in our community, the better our chances to add more physicians to our workforce.
Big thanks to our moderators, presenters and planning participants!
