Having started two life sciences companies in Spokane, Dr. Lisa Shaffer will share her experiences in start-ups in both the human healthcare sector and direct to consumer testing markets. Signature Genomic Laboratories was the first company in the world to commercialize the scanning of the genome in children with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This revolutionary approach quickly became the standard of care in medical genetics for identifying the underlying genetic changes contributing to these conditions. Signature Genomics grew to 120 employees and was acquired in 2010. Her second and current company, Paw Print Genetics, provides genetic testing for breeders, veterinarians and dog owners. Later this year, they will launch genetic testing into the cat and domestic bird markets. She will share her unique perspectives on building businesses in Spokane, being a woman entrepreneur and developing disruptive and innovative companies.
Meet the Presenter:
Lisa G Shaffer, PhD is founder & CEO of Genetic Veterinary Sciences, Inc. (DBA Paw Print Genetics). Founded in 2012, Paw Print Genetics is a direct to consumer canine genetic testing company serving breeders, veterinarians and dog owners. After 5 short years, Paw Print Genetics is the leader in canine genetic testing. This year, they will launch services for dogs and domestic birds.
From 2003 - 2010, she was co-founder, president and CEO of Signature Genomic Laboratories in partnership with Sacred Heart Medical Center and PAML. SGL was the first company to commercialize a way to scan the genomes of children with disabilities to uncover genetic changes that explained their medical problems. Dr. Shaffer is on the Advisory Board for Gonzaga’s New Venture Labs, a board member of Innovate Washington Foundation and serves on the Development Action Committee of the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Services (SCRAPS). As a scholar, she has authored more than 300 medical publications, 4 books and numerous book chapters.
In 2008, Signature Genomics was ranked 114th in the INC 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies with revenue growth of 1,766% over the first 3 years of the company. In that same year, Dr. Shaffer was named one of the top 10 women CEOs by INC Magazine and was named Business Woman of the Year by Inland Business Catalyst Magazine. In 2009 and 2010, Signature was ranked 1,012th and 2,044th in the INC 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies. Also in 2009, Dr. Shaffer was the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Life Sciences for the Pacific Northwest and also a National Finalist in the same category. Among Dr. Shaffer’s other business achievements, she was named one of the Top 25 Innovators in 2009 by Seattle Business Magazine, received the Ken Gruzweig Innovator of the Year award by Greater Spokane Incorporated, and was a runner-up for Outstanding Achievement in Innovation in Life Sciences by Seattle Business Magazine in 2010. In July 2013, Dr. Shaffer was named by the Washington Biotechnology & Biomedical Association as a Life Sciences Innovation Northwest Woman to Watch and was honored in October, 2016 with the YWCA’s Women of Achievement Award in Science and Technology.
Dr. Shaffer received her B.S. in Biology from Washington State University and her PhD in Human Genetics in 1990 at the Medical College of Virginia. From 1991 -2002, she held various academic ranks at Baylor College of Medicine. In 2002, Dr. Shaffer moved to Washington State University in Spokane, where she was a tenured professor in Molecular Biosciences until 2008. She is board certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics.
