To stay competitive in an ever-changing marketplace requires the steady influx of new talent. By sponsoring scholarship programs, local businesses can encourage and develop the next generation of employees who will lead their companies to greater success.
One example of this commitment to strengthen the future of our local workforce is BECU. For the past two years, BECU has supported GSI’s Greater Minds initiative by providing a scholarship fund which has been distributed to local students, many of whom would not be able to complete their postsecondary journey without this additional assistance.
This year, 10 local students were awarded $500 each to help support their education. Recipients are pursuing a variety of programs such as Education, Public Administration and Nursing. They are also attending a wide range of colleges/universities including Barnard College of Columbia University, Eastern Washington University, Grand Canyon University, University of Nevada – Reno, Washington State University and Whitworth University.
Two awardees share what these dollars mean to them and their journey:
Last year, I lost my job due to COVID and it’s been an added financial stress. Getting this support, motivates me to continue studying hard in getting my degree and to give back to my community. Thank you again for your generosity.
Sincerely, Kristina S.
This scholarship means a great deal to me personally, academically, and financially. Personally, it is an encouragement to know that others value my education, and that they’re willing to help support it. Financially, this is a big help because I have been trying to work overtime shifts to help cover all of the school expenses that aren’t covered by loans. This $500 scholarship will mean that I can pay more time and attention to my studies rather than working to earn extra money. The time spent studying will make an impact on my academics.
Thank you, Nathan
