After 41 years of inspiring students and shaping futures, Kevin Kernan is retiring from his role as a CTE Industrial Technology teacher at Deer Park High School in the Deer Park School District. A proud graduate of the University of Idaho, where he earned his degree in Industrial Education, Kevin’s career is a testament to the power of mentorship, perseverance, and a passion for hands-on learning.
A Foundation Built on Mentorship
Kevin’s path into education was shaped early on by the influence of Jeff Uhling, a high school friend and college roommate. Jeff’s “big-brother” guidance was instrumental in Kevin’s decision to pursue both his undergraduate degree and an Educational Leadership Administration degree. Another pivotal figure in his journey was Charlie Huggins, Kevin’s first principal, who hired him right out of college and mentored him through his formative years as a teacher. Charlie’s support during those crucial first six years helped Kevin establish a strong foundation, leading to decades of impact in the classroom.
Creating Champions, Both on and off the Court
As a young teacher, Kevin took on additional roles, including coaching varsity volleyball and girls’ basketball, guiding his teams to two state championships and a third-place finish. These experiences built his confidence as a leader, which he carried into his teaching. Over the years, he continued to coach students to great success, including guiding them to become national Freshwood contest competitors and SkillsUSA finalists. He takes immense pride in helping students realize their potential beyond the classroom.
Impacting Generations of Students
Reflecting on his career, Kevin says, “I will miss watching students master skills like welding fabrication, advanced woodworking, and CNC technologies. Over the decades, one of my greatest joys has been seeing countless students grow from wide-eyed beginners to skilled craftsmen, forming lifelong friendships and then heading out into the world to do great things.”
Looking Ahead
Though he’s stepping away from full-time teaching, Kevin’s passion for education remains strong. He plans to take on a new role as Washington State Educational Sales Representative for Grizzly Equipment, where he’ll travel and consult with high schools across the state. Kevin also looks forward to spending time with his four grandchildren and indulging in his favorite pastimes, including fishing, hunting, skiing, golfing, and hiking.
Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation
For aspiring educators, Kevin’s advice is simple yet powerful: “Get as many students as you can involved in leadership activities, so they have the opportunity to compete with their peers at the regional, state, and national levels. This builds the competitive skills they’ll need for their futures.” He also encourages community members to get involved, whether through advisory committees, school boards, or volunteer opportunities, to help shape the next generation of leaders.
Kevin’s legacy will continue to inspire students and educators alike, a lasting testament to his dedication and love for teaching. From a grateful community, we thank you for your service, Kevin!
