GSI Statement on Washington State Supreme Court Ruling on Proposition 1

Greater Spokane Inc. is disappointed by the recent Washington State Supreme Court decision overturning Spokane’s voter-approved Proposition 1.

In August 2024, GSI joined the Downtown Spokane Partnership in filing an amicus brief in support of Proposition 1. This initiative represented our community’s clear intent to protect public spaces near sensitive areas—such as schools, parks, playgrounds, and childcare centers—from the risks associated with unlawful encampments. Proposition 1 was a strong statement by voters that public safety and the well-being of our shared spaces matter as well as the critical importance of the local initiative process and this action by the Supreme Court undermines the voice of the Spokane voter.

We recognize the complex challenges Spokane and our business community face related to homelessness, addiction, and public safety. Spokane’s future depends on tackling challenges such as this with both compassion and safety in mind. GSI remains committed to addressing these business challenges and will continue to advocate for a safe, thriving community for all. We urge the Spokane City Council to take legislative action to ensure the intent of the Prop 1 and the will of the voters stays in place in our public spaces.
