GSI Statement on COVID-19 Restrictions

(SPOKANE, Wash.) – The CEO and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Greater Spokane Inc. (GSI), Spokane County’s Associate Development Organization (ADO), issued the following statement on new restrictions announced today by Governor Inslee on Washington citizens and businesses:

GSI is very concerned with the increasing numbers of not only COVID-19 cases, but the hospitalizations and deaths that are proven to follow these increases. We understand today’s new restrictions are extremely difficult to hear for citizens and businesses alike, as we realize some businesses in our community may not make it through.

For the sake of our employer community, we implore observance to responsible decisions at home that are proven to slow the spread of Covid-19. Employers have done their part over the last eight months to keep employees and the public safe, adjusting to the guidance issued by public health officials to promote both worker and customer safety. They need our support now more than ever.

This is not forever, but for now. The current spike in Covid-19 cases is largely the result of private social gatherings, and our businesses are paying the price. The fastest path back to having more businesses open is for us to work together to reduce the spread. It’s imperative now that all Washingtonians do their part — at work and home.

With our membership and the entire business community in mind, we urge the governor to carefully balance the public health consequences of his decisions with the economic consequences. We know the new restrictions deal another significant setback to businesses that are struggling to survive following the shutdown this spring.

Even, and especially, in difficult times, together we’re greater. Thank you for your continued support.
