GSI New Governance Structure: Strengthening Leadership and Engagement

2025 marks the first year in which GSI’s new governance structure is in full swing. In 2024, GSI implemented the new governance model designed to enhance leadership effectiveness, increase engagement, and improve decision-making. This transformation stemmed from a 2021 task force review, which identified opportunities to build a more efficient, inclusive, and forward-thinking governance structure.

The previous 75-member Board of Trustees has now been restructured into an Executive Board, a Leadership Advisory Council, and six specialized committees to ensure strategic oversight, broader engagement, and leadership development opportunities.

Why the Change?

The task force focused on several key objectives:

  • Building a more efficient fiduciary governance model to better oversee GSI’s strategic direction.
  • Expanding board member engagement in decision-making to harness diverse perspectives and expertise.
  • Clarifying leadership pathways, ensuring members understand how to progress within GSI’s governance structure, including participation in the Executive Board and Leadership Advisory Council.

Key Structural Changes:

  • Executive Board (18 members): Focuses on fiduciary and governance responsibilities, enabling faster, more strategic decision-making.
  • Leadership Advisory Council (LAC): Provides insights and guidance on economic development, workforce initiatives, and business advocacy.
  • Six Specialized Committees: Engage members in shaping GSI’s strategies and initiatives.

By refining its governance model, GSI ensures that Spokane’s business leaders remain actively involved, strategic priorities are executed efficiently, and leadership development remains a clear and accessible path for board members.
