Hospitals face significant challenges in IV line management, a critical yet complex aspect of hospital patient safety. IV misidentification, tangled lines, and unclear labeling can lead to medication errors, delayed treatments, and increased strain on nursing staff. These issues are especially concerning for geriatric patient care, as older adults are more vulnerable to adverse drug events due to multiple medications and polypharmacy risks. Traditional IV management systems often lack the organization needed to ensure efficiency and medication safety, making it difficult for health care providers to track and administer medications accurately.

Crimson Medical Solutions, a Spokane-based medical device startup, recognized this critical gap and developed an innovative IV line management system designed to reduce medication errors and streamline IV labeling. Their patented IV Manager enhances nursing workflow efficiency while improving hospital medication safety, ensuring better outcomes for patients and health care providers alike.

Collaboration with University of Washington’s Health Innovation Hub

The University of Washington School of Nursing Office for Nursing Research and Innovation is collaborating with the Digital Health Innovation Hub and their UW School of Nursing Simulation Center to research Crimson Medical Solutions’ IV line management system for integrating into real-world hospital settings. This partnership represents a major step forward in bringing health     innovation to practice and improving patient safety in hospitals.

GSI’s Grant Support for Life Science Innovation

Crimson Medical Solutions received $13,400 in life sciences funding from Greater Spokane Inc. (GSI) as part of the 2020-2021 Life Sciences and Health IT Cohort. This grant provided essential support for legal services, medical device marketing, and business development, helping the company advance its innovative health care solutions.

“The funding we received from GSI played a pivotal role in bringing Crimson Medical Solutions to where we are today,” said Stephen Bone, CEO and Co-Founder, Crimson Medical Solutions. “Innovation thrives on collaboration, and we are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of the entrepreneurship community in Spokane.”

GSI was awarded a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce to provide economic development support for small businesses in the life sciences sector. From these funds, GSI created two business assistance cohorts to help health care startups and health IT companies access critical resources. Crimson Medical Solutions was one of four companies selected for the second cohort.

Building a Thriving Life Sciences Industry in Spokane

The two cohorts, funding, and business assistance are part of a larger initiative led by GSI called Life Sciences Spokane. This initiative aims to establish Spokane as a leading center for health sciences, including medical education, life sciences research, and commercialization. Originally launched as VISION 2030, the initiative is expected to generate more than 9,000 new jobs and $1.7 billion in economic impact by 2030.

GSI serves as Spokane County’s Associate Development Organization (ADO), working in partnership with the Washington State Department of Commerce to drive economic growth and support local businesses in the life sciences industry and beyond.
