Greater Spokane Incorporated believes that Education Grows Economies. By providing tools to help create and expand a well-educated and technically skilled workforce, GSI invests in the future prosperity of our local economy. On May 20 GSI attended the First in Family event, a celebration for John R. Rogers and North Central High School students who are the first in their families to graduate high school and go on to college. Students shared stories of overcoming challenges, like poverty and addiction, to rise to the top of their class and create a better future for themselves. These students are awesome examples of Spokane School’s motto: Learn how we’re shaping the future.
North Central Principal, Steve Fisk, describes the students as “the ones who know how to succeed.” Investing in education for motivated students is an investment in the economic prosperity and workforce vitality of our area, and promoting such productive, innovative, hard-working individuals helps to ensure the future of their respective workforces. These area students will be attending a variety of local, regional and national universities as they continue on their paths to educational success.

The students who were honored took time to recognize the dedication of the mentors and teachers who helped them reach this impressive goal, and reminded everyone of the importance of investing in educators who inspire students to become the best they can be, by going above and beyond what is required to help students achieve their goals of going to college and pursuing a career.
Larry Moran, principle of The Moran Education Foundation, an organization that provides financial assistance to K-12 students in need, helped raise funds for the event, which included a catered dinner at the Davenport Hotel. “We are proud to partner with the staff and students of Rogers and North Central to reinforce the fact that graduating from high school will have a positive impact on the rest of their generation and generations to come,” Moran said.
