Spokane STEM Network: Math Is Cool

The Spokane STEM Network works to transform the way we think, learn, work and live through STEM by enhancing STEM education opportunities for all youth in the region and by increasing the number of students pursuing and achieving success in STEM careers. Nearly 30 percent of the fastest-growing occupations in the next decade will require at least some background in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, and the largest gaps between workforce demands and supply are all STEM-related careers. 

With that in mind, here’s some exciting news recently shared with Spokane STEM from Saint George’s School:

Saint George’s School “Math is Cool” Students Win Regional Title

SPOKANE, WA – Saint George’s School’s 11th-12th grade Math is Cool team took 1st place in the Eastern Washington Regional Championships held at SFCC on Oct. 22.  They out-scored big Division I high school teams from Spokane and as far away as Pullman, Richland and Wenatchee, according to their coach, SGS math teacher Judson Ford.

Several Dragons won awards in the 11th-12th grade individual competitions. In Calculus, Jerry Chu was 1st overall, with Teddy Jiang 6th and Michael Thew 10th. In the PreCalculus competition, Jennifer Wang was 6th and Collin Cremers 7th overall. Other SGS 11th-12th team members include Kenneth Day, Jehan Ravasia, Botao Shan, Malinda Wagstaff, Eunkyo Yang and James Yao.

The SGS 9th-10th grade team finished 4th overall at the same regional championships. In the 9th-10th grade individual competitions, Connor Cremers was 1st overall in Geometry, and Shadow Cheng was 5th in Algebra II. Other SGS 9th-10th team members include Solveig Baylor, Sharon Broderick, Delaney Ennis, Alyssa Fery, Sarah Gortler, Kyle Luiten, Anna Nowland, Katie Thew and David Zhu.
