For Immediate Release: A Journey of Hope
Auburn – Each year, more than 100 men embark on a cross-country bicycle trip to test their limits, spread awareness, and celebrate the abilities of all people. With three routes kicking off on the West Coast, teams spend the summer crossing the country over a combined 12,000 miles with an arrival at the Capitol Lawn in Washington DC to mark the end of a life-changing event. Along the way, the team spreads the message of disability awareness through local media and makes stops at partner organizations where we deliver joy to our friends from the disability community. This event is called “Journey of Hope” and is put on by The Ability Experience.
For many people with disabilities, isolation can have a substantial impact on one’s sense of self and well-being. After riding an average of 75 miles a day, teams are dancing, playing games, or leading campfire songs at a friendship visit with a local group that supports people with disabilities. For many partner organizations, the team’s arrival each year is something folks anticipate like a holiday
One of their early stops will be the new Spokane location of Ashley House NW. On Tuesday, June 13th, 2023 Ashley House NW will host a team of 35 bikers at our Spokane location (4118 S Cook St, Spokane, WA 99223) We invite you to join us! (@ 12:00 pm)
The mission of Ashley House is to provide comprehensive cost-effective quality care to medically fragile children, teens and young adults in home-like settings. We provide education to families and care givers, building support systems, coordinating services and nurturing the development of each individual. Founded in 1989, Ashley House has a 32-year track record of caring for medically fragile children and youth, providing services to over 900 children and youth and their families.
We are proud after a two-year hiatus due to be partnering with The Ability Experience as they bike across the country on a Journey of Hope.

Each year, The Ability Experience’s “Journey of Hope” works to raise awareness—and money—to help. Bike riders from Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity Houses across the nation embark on a cross-country bicycle trip to test their limits, spread awareness, and celebrate the abilities of all people. This year’s trip kicked off in Seattle on June 8th, and included a stop at our Auburn house, where we provided dinner, and got to learn a bit about these young men riding for a cause. We met college students from Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Texas, California and New York, who will spend 60 days biking from Seattle to Washington DC. So if you see that sign on the back of a van, give them a wave or a thumbs up.
