For this edition of Member Monday, we’re thrilled to highlight Zak! Designs as they celebrate their 50 year anniversary!
Founded in 1976 by Irv Zakheim in Los Angeles, CA, Zak! Designs began as an importer of puka shell necklaces. From those early roots, the company quickly evolved into something much bigger—and a little zanier. Innovative products like their Zany Zoo oven mitts even made an appearance on the set of Seinfeld, helping the brand gain national recognition.
By the mid-1980s, Irv had a vision to put licensed characters on children’s dinnerware—a move that paid off in a big way. With the success of products featuring The Little Mermaid and other beloved characters, Zak! became a leader in creative, character-driven lifestyle products.
In 1992, Zak! Designs moved its operations to Airway Heights, WA, bringing five employees and a bold mission to the Spokane region. What started as a small relocation has since grown into a thriving business known for bringing joy to everyday routines through fun and functional products.
Today, Zak! Designs offers a wide range of items—from children’s dinnerware to branded drinkware and adult hydration products—that can be found online and in stores across the country, including major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Amazon.
Zak! Designs’ success story is one of creativity, resilience, and community impact. As they celebrate their 50-year anniversary, we’re proud to recognize their contributions to our regional economy and culture—and grateful to have them as part of the GSI community.
