For the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of joining Greater Spokane Inc. each year for the annual Washington, D.C. Fly-In. I continue to participate because I see the tangible value of showing up, advocating for our region, and staying informed about the issues that impact our community. I believe that when a focused, engaged group of our size has a seat at the table and asks questions, listens, shares, and learns —it makes a real difference.
This year’s delegation brought together an impressive cross-section of leaders from across our region, including professionals in education, workforce, agriculture, health care, transportation, science, government, media, engineering, financial services, manufacturing, hospitality, tourism, recreation, and small business. My motivation has never been tied to a specific agenda—I’m driven by a broader goal: to help our region thrive. When our community succeeds, we all benefit.
Throughout our full, fast-paced schedule, we had meaningful conversations that touched nearly every sector of our economy and daily life. Highlights included a Wednesday briefing with the Chiefs of Staff for Representative Baumgartner and Senators Cantwell and Murray; meetings with the Secretary of the Air Force, Department of Education officials, a leading expert on tariffs and trade, and a breakout session with the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
On Thursday, we continued discussions with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, staff from the House Natural Resources Committee on hydropower and dams, and met with Representative Newhouse, Senator Cantwell and Senator Murray.
What stood out to me most this year was the level of candor in our conversations. Many officials were refreshingly honest about the complexity of the issues, the uncertainty of timelines, and the challenges ahead. While we didn’t always hear the answers we hoped for, the transparency and willingness to engage in straightforward discussions were notable and encouraging.
Our visit to the Australian Embassy also stood out. Several Australian representatives openly shared their perspectives on tariffs, international relations, and global policy goals, prompting Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Robertson to remind us that they were speaking as individuals and not in any official capacity. It was refreshing to hear such a wide range of viewpoints.
Additional highlights included the Grand Reception at the U.S. Botanic Garden and a Candlelight Capitol Tour with former Congressman Bart Gordon—who captivated us with his storytelling and historical knowledge—added a special dimension to the experience.
Beyond the access to national decision-makers, one of the most valuable aspects of the Fly-In is the relationships formed within our own delegation. Spending dedicated time together fosters deeper understanding and collaboration among community leaders. I always walk away with a broader view of the challenges others face and a deeper appreciation for the work happening across our region.
I highly encourage others to attend the D.C. Fly-In—it’s an unparalleled opportunity to connect, learn, and make a lasting impact. I’m already looking forward to next year!
