Annual 2018 Invent Washington Regional Competition

Innovation Through Inspiration

Written by Deb Johnson, Education Director, Invent Washington

Since last August, over four hundred Washington state teachers have spent an entire Saturday learning how to teach the invention process to their students.  Teachers were provided a vast quantity of resources  from which to develop units of instruction and classroom lessons on the invention process.  These lessons culminated with individual students identifying problems and developing their own inventions and prototypes to solve those problems.  You are welcome to view a brief video on Invention for more information here.

Schools are now having their own Invention Fairs to determine which finalists will enter the annual Invent Washington Regional Competition on Saturday, March 24th  at North Central High School, 1600 North Howard Street, in Spokane, WA.

Students and judges will arrive to North Central High School at 7:30am on March 24th.   Students and families will set up their invention displays and prototypes; volunteer will be trained on how to judge.  When inventions are being judged, students and families will tour a Science Vendor Fair at North Central and then, if they wish, our Invention Families will go to the Mobius Science Center.

From 1:00pm until 2:30 pm, student inventors and judges will return to the student invention displays and judges will interview student inventors about their projects, how they researched their problems and developed their prototypes.  At this same time, student inventions will also be open to the public, media, and families from 1:00pm until 2:30pm.  There will be lots of ideas share, questions answered, and picture taken.

At 3:00 pm we will hold an Awards Ceremony in the auditorium of North Central High School.
