We are excited to announce that the Spokane STEMposium has transitioned to the Eastern Washington Regional Science and Engineering Fair (EWRSEF), an annual competition for 6th-12th grade students from Ferry, Lincoln, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens and Whitman counties. This exciting transition will allow us to reach more students throughout eastern Washington and provide them the opportunity to compete in state and international science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fairs. The overarching goal of the EWRSEF is to encourage students in their studies of science, technology, engineering, and math, and to explore career opportunities in technical fields. Specifically, the EWRSEF is working to:
- Support effective STEM education to ensure future economic vitality and quality of life in the state, region, and nation.
- Provide a continuous supply of highly trained men and women to meet the workforce demands of Washington State’s STEM driven economy.
- Provide and maintain resources to help K-12 schools in eastern Washington counties build the capacity needed to increase competency in STEM education.
- Encourage business leaders, scientific institutions, and K-12 educational institutions to support and encourage the study of STEM fields.
Participation in science fairs stimulates students’ interest in science and technology while simultaneously promoting the development of communication, decision making, evaluation of alternative solutions, and critical thinking.
The EWRSEF is now one of five regional fairs in Washington that are connected to the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair (WSSEF; wssef.org) and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF; isef.org). The EWRSEF will be held on the WSU Spokane campus on March 16, 2017. Individuals and student teams will compete for scholarships, awards, and the chance to win all expense paid trips to the 2017 International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, CA May 14-19, 2017. All EWRSEF students can advance to WSSEF in Bremerton on April 1, 2017 where they can compete for over $1 million in awards, scholarships and prizes and also earn the chance to win all expense paid trips to the Intel ISEF.
Students and teachers can go to the EWRSEF website (ewrsef.org) to find details on registration and research guidelines. All students and teachers much register online. If students are using animals, humans or hazardous chemicals, they must register no later than January 11, 2017 to allow the EWRSEF Scientific Review Committee to review and approve their projects. All remaining projects must be registered no later than February 15, 2017. Projects that miss these deadlines will not be allowed to participate.
EWRSEF fair organizers are seeking financial support, mentors and judges for this exciting event. We already have over 120 projects representing over 200 students registered, so our need for financial and volunteer support is greater than ever before.
