Celebrating Manufacturing in the Month of October
Manufacturing has been an important part of Spokane’s economy, fueling growth, innovation, and job creation across the region. It employs thousands of residents and produces a wide array of goods, many of which are essential to industries around the world.
With over 1,400 manufacturing businesses in the greater Spokane area, the sector employs more than 17,000 people and contributes nearly $4 billion to the local economy.* One of the most dynamic sectors is manufacturing for the aerospace industry, which now includes more than 120 manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and related organizations across the region. These companies contribute cutting-edge technology and products to the global aerospace industry, reinforcing Spokane as a hub for advanced manufacturing.
A prime example is Collins Aerospace, which manufactures carbon brakes for commercial and military aircraft right here in our area. Collins Aerospace recently broke ground on a $200 million expansion, highlighting its deep commitment to the region and its critical role in global aerospace production.
From aerospace components and aluminum casting to medical supplies, artisanal spirits, and industrial equipment, these locally-made products serve a variety of markets and are making their mark on Spokane. For example, Dry Fly Distilling is Washington State’s first distillery since Prohibition, while Spiceology is the fastest-growing spice company in the United States. Wagstaff, a family-owned business for nearly 80 years, manufactures equipment essential to aluminum casting. Premier Manufacturing excels in precision metal fabrication, and Knife River, a prestress concrete manufacturer built a new $40 million facility and created 80 full-time jobs. The Lighthouse for the Blind, a not-for-profit organization, provides employment, support, and training for people who are blind, DeafBlind, or blind with other disabilities.
Although Manufacturing Week officially runs from October 4-11, we’re celebrating the industry all month long. To kick things off, students are getting a hands-on look at advanced manufacturing today at Wagstaff through GSI’s Business AfterSchool program. This event introduces students to cutting-edge technologies and the diverse career opportunities available in this growing field. Today, the Manufacturing Matters Expo hosted by the Spokane Valley Chamber brings businesses together to discuss industry trends. Tomorrow, on October 4, the AWB Manufacturing Week Bus will stop in Spokane to visit with local manufacturers, and on October 7-8, a Manufacturing Suppliers Expo takes place at Mirabeau Park Hotel & Convention Center.
We’re also honoring our manufacturing partners and their significant contributions to the community. Manufacturing businesses make up nearly 10% of GSI’s membership, and we encourage you to check out some of these incredible companies here. As the manufacturing industry evolves, it remains a cornerstone of Spokane’s economy, shaping the future of our community for years to come.
