Our program is based in the premise that students in rural communities choose careers in the health sciences at a lower frequency than their peers in more urban communities, because they have fewer role models and mentors. This project is designed to integrate exposure to health science careers with structured mentoring in rural schools to encourage youth to envision themselves in health care careers and then equip them academically to succeed in these career pathways.
The 9th grade health course will touch all aspects of the healthcare delivery system, which will include a CPR certification and capstone project, addressing healthcare access issues faced by residents of Stevens county. The 10th grade human-focused Anatomy & Physiology course, will prepare students for work in health science fields. These two courses will comprise a CTE track that will lead into career launch offerings proposed for 11th and 12th grade. We believe that the ultimate result will be more rural youth pursuing health care professions and an increase in the number of these professionals practicing in rural Washington.
