Advocating for House Bill 1057 to Advance Economic Opportunities

Gary Ballew, Vice President of Economic Development at Greater Spokane Inc. (GSI), testified today in support of House Bill 1057, a critical piece of legislation designed to enhance economic opportunities for Washington’s working families and small businesses. HB 1057 would establish a framework for coordinating and attracting federal investment to Washington state by committing state resources to assist economic development organizations, particularly in rural counties near Spokane.

During his testimony, Gary emphasized how this bill could position our state to attract new businesses, create high-quality jobs, and build a more resilient economy.

“Competitive federal grants often require matching funds, giving states that provide them a clear advantage. Oregon, more proactive than Washington under the CHIPS and Science Act, secured eight NSF Engines and EDA Tech Hub awards, while Washington had three, including Spokane’s. State funding also helps smaller communities compete for federal grants.”
