While a resolution may be on the horizon, the ongoing shutdown of the federal government is increasingly affecting community members in the Inland Northwest. From federal employees who have missed multiple paychecks, to food assistance recipients who are seeing reduced benefits this month, people need the support of our local businesses and organizations more than ever.
We have assembled some resources to help people find the financial or nutritional assistance they need while the shutdown continues. If you can offer support to those needing help right now, there are dozens of organizations around the Spokane area who are accepting financial and material donations to help meet the increased need.
Nutrition and Essential Product Assistance
RANGE Media, Waters Meet Foundation, and Spokane Community Against Racism have created a Food Resource Map to support individual and community responses to the current food crisis. The map shows where you can get food resources and by clicking the “Give Support” tab on the left side of the map, you can see where you can help, donate or share resources.
Organizations like 2nd Harvest and Salvation Army run food banks for community members in need. Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners and The Spokesman-Review have also developed lists of organizations providing food security resources during the shutdown.
As SNAP benefits are reduced, families must spend more on food and less on other personal essentials like diapers, toiletries, and clothing. Organizations like Partners INW, Mission Community Outreach Center, and Catholic Charities accept donations of diapers and other personal items for distribution.
Financial Assistance
Local banks and credit unions may offer programs such as short-term, no-interest loans, skip-a-payment options, or loan modifications to federal employees affected by the shutdown. USAA, and Navy Federal Credit Union all offering short term loans to members. Local credit unions Global Credit Union, Gesa, Numerica, Canopy, and STCU are offering similar programs. Check with your bank or financial institution to see what programs they are offering.
Even if the government shutdown ends tomorrow, people and organizations will continue to feel the effects for weeks and months to come. We can help each other navigate these challenges as a community and we encourage you to reach out early if you need help and to be generous with your support if you can offer assistance to those affected. As always, we are greater together.
