New FLSA salary exemptions take effect Dec. 1

**Nov. 22 update: A federal judge imposed an injunction against the new Department of Labor FLSA overtime rules, Tuesday, Nov. 22. As a result the rules are therefore halted, and will not go into effect, Dec. 1.**

Changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) take effect Dec. 1, 2016. These changes increase the minimum salary for a full-time exempt employee to $913 each week, or $47,476 per year.

These changes affect exempt employees classified under the FLSA Executive, Administrative, or Professional exemptions. The new salary level requirements do not apply to doctors, lawyers, or teachers. Across the U.S., these changes will create the potential to extend overtime pay protection to more than 4 million workers in the first year.

Since the Department of Labor announced the changes in May earlier this year, businesses have asked questions regarding its effects and the types of employees impacted. Spokane’s Associated Industries has analyzed the upcoming changes, and has presented at a number of workshops throughout the region to educate businesses of what’s coming.
